She Hulk: Ex-Wife of Mr Immortal

October 6, 2022 by Heidi Rew

I can’t believe I’m writing this but I was recently in She Hulk! Ex-wife of Mr Immortal, technically, ex-wife #1 or Amy. It was an amazing experience. Now that it’s out, I can breath again. For awhile, I didn’t want to believe it was real because 1| in case my part was cut or I ended up just a voiceover and 2| being a part of the Marvel Universe (very small part) seems like a lofty dream. I tend to keep my expectations low in the world of acting and voiceover. It helps me to not get too excited. The more excited you get, the more disappointing it is if it doesn’t work out the way you thought. But now that it’s out, I can share with you in this blog post. Plus, share my experience on set. ;p

AUDITIONING FOR EX-WIFE #1 in SHE HULK

When I auditioned, I didn’t know it was for She Hulk. They asked us to improv, which I love. I remember thinking, “That was just so fun.” When they pinned me for the role, I was kind of shocked but still didn’t bet on getting it. When I did, was a little overwhelmed that it was a Marvel show.

SHOOT DAY

They shot the episode at Trilith in Peachtree City. It was still in the middle of Covid, so we had to stay in our trailer outside of shooting.

Many years ago, I was on a Tyler Perry production. I was sitting in the makeup chair just waiting so I was on my phone. I heard a conversation next to me with a familiar voice. It was Tyler Perry. He finished up his coversation then walked out. I hated that I missed an opportunity to say hello because of my phone. Since then, I’ve kept my phone in the trailer. This way I can be present.

Next time, I may at least bring a book. There was a lot of waiting on the actual set. But it also allowed me to witness Renee Elise Goldsberry receive a call that she was nominated for an Emmy (for Hamilton). She had tears in her eyes and it was so special being there for that.

Ginger Gonzaga is incredible at improv. Her brain works so fast! It was amazing to witness.

David Pasquesi was kind and quiet.

The rest of the spouses were lovely to work with!

Anu Valia was the director for my scenes and was wonderful. Great director. Very collaborative and had some very creative ideas. Some of those ideas didn’t make the scene but it was fun to watch her create.

LESSONS LEARNED

One of the most valuable aspects of booking a job is what you’re able to learn on set. At least, that’s what I believe.

Here are some lessons I learned that day:

1| Come to Contribute

If I book something, I come to set with the mindset of “just don’t screw this up.” Do your part to the best of your ability, don’t get in anyone’s way, don’t talk too much and speak when spoken to.

The main characters came to the rehearsal with ideas for their characters – WHERE their character would stand, HOW they would stand, actions to make the scene more interesting, etc.

Watching all they contributed made me rethink my mindset. I should come to set and my auditions with ideas of how I can contribute even more to the story and scene. More than likely, the chance to share those ideas would never happen BUT wouldn’t it make me a better actor if I at least started thinking that way? And at the end of the day, that’s my goal – to be a better actor, to contribute in a positive way that helps the story, the crew and the viewer.

2| It’s Confirmed: Leave the Phone

It’s hard when everyone else is on their phone. There aren’t many important conversations are had when others are on their phone but it allows you to take in everything from that day. Sets are filled with tons of people doing tons of different jobs. The visuals from that entire day are cemented in my brain and I’m grateful for the boredom.

3| Don’t Dwell on Mistakes

A cameraman had me move slightly during one part. He kept telling me I was off on timing by a second or two. I really thought I was doing it right but couldn’t get that out of my mind. What went through my mind was, “Come on Heidi. You know timing and how to hit marks. How are you off on this?” I started thinking, “They’re probably just gonna cut my whole part because of this.”

My part didn’t get cut. It didn’t have any impact on the scene. Mistakes are going to happen. Learning from them moves us forward, dwelling on them keeps us in place.

This is such a small part, I feel a little strange handing out these thank yous like I won some award but also…no career victory (big or small) happens just because of one person (I believe anyways).

Thank You: Get Taped taping service, People Store (talent agency), Paris Feldstein Casting, my incredibly supportive husband Mike and the rest of the She Hulk crew.

Female PROMO VOICE FOR JERRY SPRINGER

June 17, 2022 by Heidi Rew

Never in a million years would I have thought these words would be said, “I am the female promo voice for Jerry Springer.” Me, Heidi Rew. The girl that grew up straight-laced, didn’t drink until after 21, never did drugs and didn’t even kiss a guy until I was 17. That girl is now teasing infidelity, mystery baby daddies and back stabbing. And I couldn’t be more excited.

https://youtu.be/_UELAePyK8c?si=6m6WLFHzFnGai7aV

I apologize in advance for the chant that will now be stuck in your head – Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!

The reason I am so grateful Twist has given me the opportunity to voice this promo (and so many others for their network) is because it is so opposite my personality. We go into acting to be someone else but oftentimes we just get cast in the roles that are most “us.” The rare opportunities that we get to play opposite our natural personality is pretty exciting. Not to mention the fact that the Jerry Springer show was such an entertainment industry icon when I was growing up.

Over 4 years ago is when I finished my promo coaching and made my demo. Until I signed with ACM, I didn’t really have much opportunity to audition for promos – just a few here and there. The opportunity to be the promo voice of Twist came through an old contact. He offered me a chance to audition. I did, months passed and then they reached out and said I was one of the final voices they were considering. They had me re-audition with different direction and then months passed. I had almost forgot I even auditioned when they contacted me and said I was the official promo voice of Twist.

I’ve never felt like I had a strong voice…a voice you’d want to tee up something exciting or salicious, so I was surprised and honored. It’s now been a year and a half and I’m so grateful for Greg Osborne and the rest of the Twist team for letting me be a part!

That’s probably one of the parts of this industry I love – you never know what may come your way. You never know if you may just end up the female promo voice for the Jerry Springer Show.

2021 Commercial Trends

May 10, 2021 by Heidi Rew

For this years, VO Atlanta, I hosted two breakout sessions. The first was titled, “2021 Commercial Trends.” The second one was “What 4 Years of Not Booking Taught Me About Resilience.” I thought I’d share some of the insights about Commercial Trends.

VO Atlanta Heidi Rew

We started off actually going back to the start of Covid.

HOW 2020 DISRUPTED ADVERTISING

Disrupted Advertising

It’s so interesting to see the different shifts in messaging and tone. I was actually really surprised I didn’t book more jobs at the start of Covid. I thought I’d be a good fit because my voice has a natural warmth & empathy to it. But companies needed authority with that warmth. They needed their customers to get a sense that they would figure out solutions to their problems. I leaned way too far into the warmth and empathy to exhibit any authority.

I saw 3 different waves throughout the initial stages of Covid in advertising –

1| ADDRESS CUSTOMER’S CONCERN

2| OFFER SOLUTIONS

3| IN THIS TOGETHER

Dan Schroeter Testimonial

Going forward through the rest of 2021, regarding messaging, we’re going to see more

FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY

Increasingly, sustainability is becoming more important to customers, so brands will make sure they let their customers know it’s important to them too.

Focus Sustainability

CONTINUED EMPHASIS ON STORYTELLING

A great way to leave a memorable impression without being salesy? Tell a story.

HOW COMPANIES CAN PROVIDE – ESCAPE, ADVENTURE, TOGETHERNESS & COMMUNITY

As we’re able to finally gather again, companies want to be there to help create these opportunities, support the gatherings and solve the need.

LIGHT-HEARTED, GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR

It’s been a rough year. We all need a laugh!

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Messages and visuals will continue to include and showcase everyone!

Diversity inclusion

1| NATURAL, REAL READ – Carli Silver, of Sound & Fury Casting, says 90% of the voice castings they send out are for the natural, real read.

2| SPOKEN WORD/SLAM POETRY – Amanda Gorman impacted us all during the 2021 inauguration. And that style continues to impact the advertising/commercial world too.

3| EMBRACING ACCENTS/UNIQUE VOCAL QUALITIES – The polished, smooth voice is out for national commercial spots. Everyone is asking for something unique…maybe even a little quirky.

4| LESS PULLED BACK VO (as in almost whispering in someone’s ear) and MORE KITCHEN TABLE proximity – This is still more intimate than in years past, but less hushed and more like you’re having a conversation with someone at your kitchen table.

Top 2021 Trends

Commercial trends are changing all the time – between the messaging and the tone. As a voice talent, it’s our job to keep up with how it’s changing so we can be informed while auditioning. It’s another piece to the puzzle that helps me give a client/casting director a great read.

If you’re a voice talent and would love to learn more about how to get to these reads, check out one of our many classes, workshops or private coaching at Atlanta Voiceover Studio and ProVoiceoverTraining.com.

THE VOICE OF TWIST

April 3, 2021 by Heidi Rew

2021 has been a great year so far! I’m excited to announce I’m the voice of Twist, a brand new network!

Twist is a new network from Tegna, Inc. It is a woman-oriented channel featuring lifestyle and reality programming. Some of my favorite reality shows will be on it – Top Chef Masters, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Tiny House Nation, Flipping Out and more.

Wanna teaser? Check this out:

https://youtu.be/CCk5N1DQrGk?si=sRx29KHotHz7RDI9

Not only will it feature hundreds of hours of home, food, and reality content with exciting reveals – or twists – at the end of each show but they’ll be asking for the audience’s real-life “twists.” In a segment called Share Your Twist viewers submit their own videos of twists they’ve been thrown in life and how they persevered through them.

Tegna already has two other very successful networks – True Crime Network and Quest. Twist will add even more great content.

Where can you see it?

“In addition to 41 TEGNA markets, Twist will be carried in 11 Univision local television markets including the top four markets of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia. Twist will also be carried in 31 HC2 Broadcasting local markets and reach DMAs covering 70 percent of U.S. television households. Additional distribution agreements are expected to be announced by summer.” Business Wire

This opportunity was one of those things I auditioned for awhile ago and honestly had forgotten about it because that’s what voice talent do…we do it and forget it…move on to the next audition. So when I got the call that I’d be the voice, I was so elated and a little shocked.

So grateful to Matt Clement that reached out with opportunity to be the voice of Twist and producer Gregory Osbourne who has been making the promos sound so good.

Wanna see if you can get Twist? Check out WatchTwist.com.

2020 may have been quite a Twist for all of us but hopefully 2021 will bring us all GOOD twists.

HOME DEPOT HOST JOB

February 26, 2021 by Heidi Rew

The start of 2021 was great because I booked a Home Depot host job through the People Store (my on-camera agent). Being an on-camera host/actor for over a decade in Atlanta, I’ve never booked a Home Depot job (on-camera wise) until now. Despite living across the street from Home Depot’s headquarters, spending SO much money at our local Home Depot and doing DIY/Home projects with my previous blog, Parties for Pennies, I just assumed that maybe I didn’t look the part for Home Depot.

Home Depot Host

For this particular job I’m not portraying a Home Depot customer but a Home Depot sales host. In the videos, I talk about an upcoming sales event (called the Power Train event) that Home Depot associates need to be aware of and help customers navigate.

The production company I worked with is called Chaselight. They do commercials, industrials and documentaries. They also were the production company that did HGTV’s House Hunters Atlanta.

Of course all productions are so different due to Covid. Even though we filmed in Home Depot’s studio, our Home Depot contacts observed virtually via Zoom. You can see their beautiful faces in the photo below in addition to the actual background that went in post production. I am supposed to look like I’m in a Home Depot store.

Home Depot Set

The shoot went really well. In fact, after the first shoot in January, they booked me for a second in February. It’s always a joy to work with a company that you personally love and frequent. And shoutout to all the amazing Home Depot associates at the Cumberland Pkwy/Vinings Home Depot! They’re always so incredibly helpful.

To see my hosting reel and more companies I’ve worked with, click here.

Thanks so much Chaselight, Home Depot and People Store!

P.S. Getting to wear the orange apron was pretty cool, if I say so.

WELCOME TO MY VOICEOVER BOOTH

February 1, 2021 by Heidi Rew

Hey friend! Welcome, come take a tour of my voiceover booth!

Voiceover booth post img01

I thought it’d be fun to share a little bit about my “home away from home” or maybe I should say my “home inside my home?”Even though we have an actual home studio we built out, my voiceover booth is actually within my office at Atlanta Voiceover Studio, since that’s where I spend most of my time. It was kind of fun to know I could decorate my office and booth how I wanted to. At our house, Mike and I share the studio, so floral wallpaper and a pink neon sign were a no-go.

You may or may not be a voice talent…but if you’re working during COVID chances are you’re working from home. So, I wanted to share some tips I’ve found helpful when creating an inspiring work space.

1| CHOOSE A VIBE

Come up with 2-3 sentences or words of how you want a space to feel for you. Mine are: INSPIRING (or Motivating), HAPPY COLORS and ORGANIZED. Now under each of those VIBE headings, list some items that would support that. For instance, under INSPIRING I put “motivational neon sign.” The sign is hot pink too, so HAPPY COLORS is checked off as well.

Voiceover booth post img02

2| CHOOSE 2-3 MAIN COLORS

This is from a design aspect. I try to choose 3 main colors to decorate my space with. It gives me a guide and creates cohesion.

Voiceover booth post img04

3| PLAN FOR EFFICIENCY

Whatever or wherever your set-up, always think about if something can help you do your job with more ease. This may mean you change things around a bit or it evolves as the year goes on. That’s okay but the more efficient your space, the easy your job will be.

Now for the technical “tour” if you will. Here’s what I use tech-wise for my voiceover booth – (all of these items can be found HERE)
