A SWEET VOICEOVER

July 1, 2020 by Heidi Rew

It’s always exciting when you get to do a voiceover for a company you personally use…especially when you’re talking about a sweet treat! I call that one sweet voiceover. That was the case when I booked Edible Arrangements. I love getting and sending Edible Arrangements.

When I booked it, it happened to fall right at the beginning of COVID19 and they were offering FREE delivery. I wanted to figure out a way to send my friends some joy during this time and with free delivery, Edible Arrangements was the perfect solution. My friends all loved them and it was such a great way to feel connected, despite being quarantined.

Here are a few of the commercials I’ve done for them:

Mother’s Day

Free Delivery

TV Spot
Edible always wants my upbeat, peppy, smiley reads for these commercials. I guess if you’re saying “Joy” you need to sound JOY-ful!

I’m partial to the classic chocolate-dipped strawberries but you can’t go wrong with anything from Edible. They even offer fresh produce, cookies, popcorn and a ton of other goodies. With so many more sweet treats to choose from, think about sending an Edible Arrangement to a friend or family member!

BLACK VOICES IN ADVERTISING

June 18, 2020 by Heidi Rew

As a voiceover actor, I want to highlight an incredible black-owned advertising agency that’s creating powerful messages for brands. These past couple of weeks have been emotional, heart-breaking and eye-opening. It’s led to conversations and a stretching of myself that I didn’t even realize was necessary.

One of the bright spots, though, has been seeing so many black businesses shared and promoted on social media. Waiting on a new hair product from one as we speak (I guess it would be “as I type” ;p).

Because I’m in the world of voiceover and love commercials and advertising, I wanted to share a black-owned and run creative agency whose purpose is to create ideas that bring awareness to and shift perceptions on racial bias and injustice.

SATURDAY MORNING, made up of founders Jayanta Jenkins, Kwame Taylor-Hayford, Keith Cartwright and Geoff Edwards with Deja Cox as the partner lead, created a powerful film for P&G to celebrate black male pride. It’s called The Look and its purpose is for the viewer to experience what it’s like to be a black man in America.

It’s really powerful and you can see it HERE

Thank you Saturday Morning for how you’re impacting the world through advertising! My hope is that the change happening in the world continues to impact the advertising and commercial world as well. I look forward to seeing more diversity in voiceover and more agencies like Saturday Morning spring up.

I hope this is one more step in ensuring black voices are heard. I’m listening.

CREATING A GREAT HOME OFFICE SPACE

May 10, 2020 by Heidi Rew

Who knew when Jonathan Tilley (personal brand strategist) asked me to join him on his podcast to talk about creating a great home office space a year ago that it’d be released during COVID19?! So many people are now working from home, which has its ups and downs. One of the “downs” is that it can feel uninspiring, chaotic and cluttered.

Check out my episode with Jonathan HERE to learn a simple way to transform your home office space from just functional (maybe it’s not even that) to inspirational.

In this episode, I talk about a crazy “weekend” project I tackled at our home.

I did not like the tile in our guest bathroom. Part of our long-term renovation plan is to re-do that bathroom but that won’t be for a little while, so I decided to PAINT our tile…oh yeah and stencil it. This picture is our BEFORE…

This little project quickly snowballed because once I realized what color I was going to paint the tile, I knew I’d need to do something else with the sink area, then I realized I’d need to get a new faucet if I did that and the mirror may work but only if I get another light fixture.

Can you see my husband ROLLING his eyes accompanied by a dramatic face palm?? That’s what was happening…and continued to happen for 2 months after.

When I started this project, I had a free weekend. Free weekends aren’t easy to come by, so it took me awhile to finish this.

But it all came together finally. I will NEVER attempt to stencil tile again…at least not with this small of a stencil. It was just impossible to do it without messing up.

It was one thing after another. Once I got another countertop, I realized there’d be a gap between that and the mirror. So I ended up doing my own peel and stick backsplash. Then the area between the sink and toilet felt so empty, so I got a shelf. And I had to get a different trash can.

Stenciling the tile in the shower was the worst. That’s where I thought I’d write out “Relax” with the hex stencil but I was so over stenciling that area that I just couldn’t do it.

You can see how wonky the stencil job is here. I gave up on the sides and painted them straight white, which is what I should’ve done for the back as well. I tried everything to hold that stencil in place.

Thankfully it’s our guest shower, so I don’t have to be reminded of my bad decision every day. ;p

The rest of the bathroom did turn out nice. I love the new hardware for the bathroom cabinet. Oh yeah…that was another thing I realized I needed to get.

Here are some more pics of all the updates…

Enough of my HOME projects. In the podcast episode with Jonathan, we talk about ways to create an inspirational space. I wanted to show you pictures of the ways I do that in my HOME voiceover studio and my space at Atlanta Voiceover Studio.

My husband and I both use the home studio, so he had say in the design as well. I tried to make it manly but also fun.

And this is my office space at Atlanta Voiceover Studio. Much different! ;p I have a neon sign that says, “Don’t Stop Get It Get It” on one wall and then quotes and pictures of my past Heidi Rew Show guests. It’s super motivating and inspiring.

You think this will get through to me??? ;p

I know that it can be tough creating a great home office space but lean into the fun of it reflecting you – what brings you joy, inspiration and motivation.

Now…Don’t Stop, Get It, Get It!

HOW TO PACK FOR ITALY…IN ONE CARRY-ON

July 15, 2019 by Heidi Rew

If you listened to my podcast, The Heidi Rew Show, you know that somehow I managed to fit all my clothes and toiletries for 11 days in Italy into a carry-on. I only repeated an outfit once (it was my overalls and I did change my tank top the 2nd time). Here’s how that happened…

My friends have always made fun of me for my “packing skills.” I’m the girl that shows up for a weekend trip with a huge suitcase AND carry-on. I knew for my trip to Italy (to record episodes for my podcast, The Heidi Rew Show) I’d need to reel it in. I’d have my podcast equipment that would take up one bag so the rest of my clothes and toiletries needed to fit in a carry-on. I knew I’d need to walk my luggage around a bit, so I wanted a manageable amount.

I could NOT believe it when everything fit in my carry-on! Now…in all honesty, I did not come back with just a carry-on and bag with my podcast equipment. Annette had an extra bag she gave me so I could carry back the souvenirs I bought.

BUT…here are the things I did that helped me pack for an 11 day trip to Italy in ONE carry-on, only using ONE outfit twice.

Overall one of the things I did better this time than ever before is PLAN!!! I started compiling my 3oz bottles of all my toiletries a few weeks ahead of time. I would go through the checklist of things I needed and ask myself 1| Is this necessary and 2| Is there any way this can be smaller (either through a similar item that’s just smaller or a different way to pack it)?

In addition to my overall strategy, here are some specifics that helped me…

1| Keep your shoe count down

Specifically for Italy (and other European cities), heels aren’t the best shoes. Which totally bums me out because I’m short and I love heels. With all the cobblestone streets, heels and even wedges can be a little dangerous.

I still wanted to look cute, so I chose my outfits based on my shoes. I bought these white Reebok shoes (my husband Mike calls them my old lady shoes but I keep telling him they’re back) that were great! My feet never hurt and we walked an average of 6-7 miles a day.

Shoes can really encroach on your packing space, so I only brought my Reeboks, flip flops, wedge (just in case but I only wore these one night) and old tennis shoes I wore on the Cinque Terre hiking trail. The tennis shoes I threw away after we hiked.

If you can wear your clunkiest shoes on the plane, that helps create more space in your carry-on.

2| Dresses are the way to go

Italians are fashionable. I didn’t want to stick out as a tourist, so I tried to make sure my outfits were at least cute. Dresses ended up to be the best bet because you didn’t need two pieces of clothing.

I looked for dresses that 1| DIDN’T WRINKLE and 2| WERE LIGHTWEIGHT (I was in Italy in June, so I knew it’d be hot). Then I used accessories to spice them up a bit – scarves, hats, layered shirts, etc. It’s amazing how a t-shirt dress can really look stylish with an accessory or two.

I brought along a denium button down shirt that I used as an accessory to tie around my waist or wear over a t-shirt dress but it also doubled as a warmer layer, if needed. Although I don’t think I got cold at all while I was in Italy (in June).

The majority of my dresses I got at Old Navy or TJ Maxx/Marshalls.

Besides dresses, skirts are also a great option. You can make them feel casual and also cute.

3| Travel-size hair dryer

With my curls, I needed to have a diffuser but that takes a lot of space. I’ve gotten a travel diffuser hair dryer before (when I went to Kenya) but it didn’t work once I got there. When I was preparing for this trip, I realized that if you bring a travel-size hair dryer overseas it needs to have DUAL VOLTAGES.

Here’s one similar to mine, but better price.

4| Mini makeup kit

I usually have a hefty makeup kit. I wanted to fit just what I needed and in a super small bag. Some of the makeup I had was pretty big, so I replaced the bigger items with as many small items as I could find.

5| Dainty Jewelry

Since I’m in the booth recording for work on a daily basis, I usually don’t wear big jewelry (always have to take it off for voiceover because it makes noise). This wasn’t that big of a change for me but I just brough a few different earrings and necklaces, so they fit in a small little jewelry box. Although, I did buy these big earrings in Forte Dei Marmi and I’ve had fun wearing them on weekends/vacation.

6| Double-duty purse

I really wanted to bring a cute purse but I needed something that would count as a “purse” on a plane but that I could 1| take with me when I was out and about in the cities and 2| fit my laptop in it.

Chose a purse that would be safe to carry around while out in the cities, plus spacious enough to fit more items. If you needed to put a couple extra items of clothing in there to free up space in your carry on, you can.

7| Collapsible Water Bottle

In Italy, there are safe public water fountains everywhere and they are the most beautiful water fountains you’ve ever seen. I knew I’d want to have a water bottle with me all the time but since I was super concerned with taking up space, I ordered this one. It’s great because you just roll it up once you’re done and it’s compact.

BONUS TIPS –

TRAVEL DETERGENT:  I brought just enough underwear but there was a day I got pretty sweaty, so I changed twice. Having the travel detergent with me to quickly wash a pair was super helpful.

PORTABLE, RENTABLE WIFI: This was helpful when we were out and about and didn’t have access to good wifi. I rented one through https://www.tepwireless.com and it was super easy.

Hope these tips were helpful! Where are you going on your trip? If you’re headed to Italy, check out my podcast episodes (Apple, Google Play, Spotify, and iHeart) about my trip to Italy and my YouTube channel where you can see pictures and videos from my trip.

Have a great day & wonderful traveling!

HOW TO THROW AN OKTOBERFEST BEER TASTING PARTY

November 27, 2018 by Heidi Rew

Hi!

If you stopped by, you probably saw my segment on Atlanta & Company about How to Throw an Oktoberfest Beer Tasting party! To watch the whole segment, click HERE.

Here are all the details from the segment so you can throw your own beer tasting!

WHAT IS OKTOBERFST?

Oktoberfest started in 1810 when the Bavarian Prince Ludwig got married to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. They invited all the citizens to celebrate with horse races, games and food. Throughout the years, the festival grew to become what it is today.

DECOR

In my segment, I layered a blue tablecloth I already had with THIS ONE that had the Oktoberfest pattern on it.

Then I hung this Oktoberfest sign in front.

Ribbon Chandelier

  • Start with a dream catcher or macrame ring
  • Cut the ribbon to your desired length (when folded in half)
  • Fold the ribbon in half, then pull the loop over and under the ring, then thread the two ribbon strands through the loop and pull tight.
  • Secure with a little dab of hot glue (be careful)
  • Continue all the way around.
  • Thread fishing line through 3 spots equal distance away on the ring, then tie together at the top.
  • Hang & enjoy!

Beer Stein Flower Arrangement

Use clear glass beer steins or true German beer steins to arrange a simple sunflower and wildflower arrangement

FOOD & DRINK

For the beer tasting, here are some beers my neighbor and beer expert (seriously…that is his job) Jeremy suggested:

Spaten Lager, Ayinger Oktoberfest, Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier and Tucher Cristal Weizen.

In Atlanta, Tower and Hop City carry these beers.

For the Oktoberfest Beer Tasting Printable, CLICK HERE.

For food, I’d do little bites – pretzel (buy these already made from a pretzel stand, pre-made pretzel dough, or try this recipe) and sausage skewers, potato salad and mini apple strudels.

ENTERTAINMENT

Make a beer bottle toss game. Use empty beer bottles, fill with rice/sand and make a ring from rope and duct tape. Set it up either like corn hole, where there’s just one bottle on either side and team members take chances throwing the rings OR set up 6 beer bottles in bowling ball form with the back bottles being the most points.

If there are kids there, you can make up pretzel necklaces with ribbon and mini pretzels.

Now, all there’s left to do is…Prost!

WAYS TO GIVE THIS CHRISTMAS

November 27, 2018 by Heidi Rew

I LOVE, LOVE Christmas! It’s my favorite holiday ever – the decorations, the smells, the lights, the parties. But I will be the first to admit that I can quickly get caught up and end up in tears because I’m stressed out. I put way too much pressure on myself to make the season magical and memorable and perfect.

The reality of it is I rarely remember Christmas decorations of year’s past or the way that complicated appetizer tasted in 2014. I want THIS year to be different. I try to live my life all yearlong with a sense of generosity towards others, but my greatest struggle is with TIME. I’m so selfish with my time. You need money for your mission trip? No problem. Oh, you want to hang out with me after a long work day? Um…can we raincheck? ;p

This Christmas, my goal is to intentionally give time to others. I’m nervous, honestly. I know it is not going to be super easy, but I want to experience Christmas this year for the reason this holiday even exists. If you’re looking for some ways to give this Christmas, check out these ideas and read below to see how you can get on the #12DaysofGiving band wagon.

These are just a few ideas, outside of the “volunteer at your local shelter/soup kitchen.” And here are some links of how to do some of them –

  • Sponsor an orphan at SERV International’s House of Hope orphanage (see my story about visiting House of Hope & meet the kids here)
  • CharityMiles.org – sign up and raise money for charities each time you exercise
  • Send a note or care package to a soldier overseas – A Million Thanks or Operation Gratitude
  • Donate blood – LifeSouth or Red Cross

If you want to join me this Christmas with #12DaysofGiving, here are the details:

I’ll be sharing my experiences on social media, so if you want to follow along you can find me @HeidiRew (FB, Twitter, IG, Snapchat).

Merry Merry Christmas! Hope your holiday is full and magical!
